HISTORIC PROVENANCE
The Sofa Verplanck is inspired by an American-made settee (ca. 1785) exhibited in The Met’s Verplanck Room, a pre-Revolutionary period room in the Museum’s American Wing. These settees, with their high backs and low arms, were designed for multiple sitters, embodying the refined social customs of the time. The original settee is part of the only remaining suite of 18th-century New York City furniture that once belonged to the influential Verplanck family.
